Same Sample, Different Results? Challenges and Bias in Microbiome DNA Extraction
Abstract:
Microbiome DNA extraction can introduce biases that influence microbial recovery and ultimately shape the results of microbiome profiling. This talk explores key challenges in microbiome DNA extraction, highlights potential sources of bias, and discusses approaches to assessing workflow performance to improve the reliability and reproducibility of microbiome data.

Overnight cultures: do you really know your inoculum?
Abstract:
Overnight cultures are a cornerstone of bacterial experiments and often the starting point for challenge tests, seed transfers or infection studies. Despite their widespread use, surprisingly little effort goes into ensuring a culture with a well-defined cell concentration and growth phase. Plate counts are labour-intensive and give the dose only the next day. Optical density is fast, but it also responds to cell size and background, so calibrations drift.
BactoBox® is a label-free flow cytometer based on impedance. It counts single bacterial cells directly and gives cell concentration within minutes.
This talk outlines the measurement principle and shows how direct cell counts reveal both the cell concentration and the growth phase before you inoculate. The result: standardised inocula and more reproducible experiments.

What You’re Missing Matters : Delivering the future of microbial genomics with Oxford Nanopore
Abstract:
Oxford Nanopore sequencing offers real-time, long-read sequencing to uncover more of the microbial world, from individual genomes to complex metagenomic communities. With flexible workflows and the ability to sequence DNA and RNA, nanopore technology is opening up new possibilities for microbial research, surveillance and diagnostics.
This talk will explore how Oxford Nanopore Technologies is advancing microbial genomics, highlighting key applications and emerging opportunities to reveal insights that might otherwise be missed.
